HOW TO DEAL WITH JOB OFFERS AND COUNTER OFFERS
2M Careers are a Construction Recruitment Agency who specialise in technical jobs and construction jobs. However the same principles when dealing with job offers and counter offer apply to most employment sectors. Here is a guide on how to deal with offers, which we hope you will find useful and informative.
Congratulations you have the job that you have been working towards during those interviews! The following takes you through some final pointers that you should bear in mind throughout this process. Remember that here at 2M Careers we can either assist or conduct all negotiations for you regarding salaries, packages and benefits. We will discuss everything with you at ALL times.
It is also worth remembering that when you get offered a job although you may know you want it you may wish some time to discuss the offer with your family. You are fully entitled to ask for some time but you should give them an indication of when you will let them know.
Once you have accepted the position it is important to not only verbally accept the position but to also respond in writing. This not only shows common courtesy but it also allows you to have a record of everything in writing. You need to receive the offer letter officially and reply in writing before you hand your resignation in.
Handing in your resignation can be nerve wracking time but you just need to stay focused and it will all be fine. See our advice on resigning.
HANDLING COUNTER OFFERS
Despite what you may feel at the time counter offers are almost always counter productive to your career!
Admittedly it is a huge ego boost receiving a counter offer but if you actually think about it you are only getting this when you tell them you are leaving. They only value YOU when you say you are leaving and that is what it takes for you to get one!
The reason that most companies make counter offers is so that they, not you, are in charge of the timetable for change. It takes a company longer to find someone than your notice period lasts for. Even if they don't look to replace you they will always remember that you tried to leave to get more money or that you do not really have the commitment to their company. They view you as disloyal and untrustworthy. You will be at the end of the queue when promotion comes around and your colleagues will all look at you differently too.
It is vital that you do not forget what prompted you to start looking for another job. All counter offers are usually about money, but usually you have had more than just that reason to move on. A few more thousand per year does not change the working conditions, type of work, people, career prospects and so on. Realistically, how long will it be until you are looking again?
We are not saying that it is easy to refuse a counter offer, it is hard starting a new job and you may feel guilty by refusing it. However remember that by gaining new skills and experience will actually make you more valuable than if you had stayed.
It is worthwhile bearing in mind that when you receive a counter offer you should act like you are taking time to consider their proposal. This way your company will respect you and you will leave on good terms. They will not feel that they are not worth even considering.
Focus on what you want and good luck with the new job!
